1. General information
The main objective of this subject is that the student deepens in the initial knowledge (concepts, strategies and competences) that define academic English (ELF) in order to develop their communicative competence for the different subjects of the degree. The knowledge acquired in the subject will consolidate the students' learning about textual and contextual aspects of a significant repertoire of written and oral academic texts.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, 10, 16 and 17 (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/ ), so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to their achievement.
2. Learning results

Recognize and apply the characteristics of academic discourse (especially at the morphological, lexical-grammatical, syntactic, semantic, discursive and pragmatic levels) and use them for the production of written and oral academic texts in English at level C1.1

Project, plan and develop an academic work.

Search for, exchange and transmit information using computer tools and new technologies at an advanced level

Search, analyse, synthesize, transmit, and critically evaluate sources of general and specialized information in academic English

Understand and express a critical and reflective position on a scientific work or academic contribution in the field of the specialty.

Make clear descriptions and presentations, placing appropriate emphasis and providing explanations, arguments and comments, as well as interacting to defend their point of view and opinions.

3. Syllabus
0. Academic English: Identifying academic spoken and written genres and their main features.
1. Academic Spoken English: Seminars, debates and discussions.
2. Introduction to Academic Research: Scholarly sources and Literature review. Methodology.
3. Academic Written English: Developing a Research Proposal.
4. Academic activities
a. Theoretical classes
Presentation and practice of the lexical-grammatical, discursive, sociolinguistic and strategic contents of academic English. (Level C1.1.)
b. Practical activities
Carrying out didactic activities oriented towards the development of the competences of the academic field
c. Individual and group tutoring
Advice and supervision in the completion of specialized academic writing learning activities (e.g. Final Degree Project).
d. Self-learning
Personal and autonomous study.
e. Other autonomous activities
Use of bibliographic and computer tools, participation in the virtual learning environment.
f. Assessment tests
Oral and written comprehension and expression (Level C1.1.)
5. Assessment system
First call.
Global assessment (100 %) comprising the following parts appropriate to CEFR level C1.1:
1. A written comprehension test which will assess both the ability to understand readings and to identify linguistic and discursive features in the proposed text (20% of the final grade).
2. Theoretical and practical questions on the contents of the subject In addition to the content of the answers, the lexical-grammatical correctness and the adequacy to the pragmatic-discursive, sociolinguistic and strategic aspects of academic discourse in English will be assessed (30% of the final grade)
3. Production of a written text. The ability to define concepts, relate ideas and credit sources of information according to the conventions of academic work in the humanities will be assessed (30% of the final grade).
4. An oral expression test in which the ability to transmit information and interact fluently on topics related to the academic field will be assessed (20% of the final grade).
In order to pass this subject, it will be necessary to pass each part of the exam.
